New Research Shows That the Dual Air Makes a Substantial Difference for Hairdressers

Brand new research from SINTEF confirms that the Dual Air professional blow-dryer makes a substantial difference to your body as a hair stylist.

The project, funded by DistriktsForsk Trøndelag in Norway, found that the working position Dual Air provides can significantly reduce strain and pressure on the user’s shoulders, arms, neck and wrists.

The research was conducted in hair salons and hairdressers in the cities of Trondheim, Sandnes, Oslo and Bergen in Norway, on normal working days with real customers.

Project Goals

The goals of the project was to answer these questions:

  • Can sensors detect when the Dual Air blow-dryer is used correctly and incorrectly?
  • How much of an ergonomic difference does Dual Air make when compared to traditional blow-dryers?

Results

The project confirmed that sensors can sense the difference between correct and incorrect use of the Dual Air. It was also confirmed that the hair stylist’s elbow and arm are significantly lower with the Dual Air compared to traditional blow-dryers.

Lower Shoulder(s)

The Dual Air gives its user a significantly lower shoulder and a less angled arm.

Graph that shows the average arm angle over time while using the Dual Air T1 blow-dryer compared to traditional blow-dryers.

The graph above ranges from 30 degrees to 90 degrees on the left value axis. When using the Dual Air (the blue line), the hair stylist’s arm was on average in a 45 degrees position out from the body, and rarely above 60 degrees.

While working with traditional blow-dryers the hair stylist's arm was often at an angle of more than 90 degrees from the body, and rarely below 60 degrees.

Higher Arm Positions, Higher Risk

Working with the arms higher than 90 degrees from the body puts the person at a high risk of developing muscle and skeletal pain.

When it comes to the risk of developing strain injuries, the weight of the blow-dryer has been proven to be far less important than the angle of the arm in relation to the vertical body axis.

With the position of the arm that Dual Air provides, the weight differences of blow dryers are insignificant.
